Givenchy Menswear Fall 2012

The menswear collection for Givenchy fall 2012 has its highs and lows. I like the browns and blacks and I also like the shiny materials. In some way it feels new and that is what we all crave for no matter if we are bloggers, editors or consumers, always something new. The nose rings feels a bit like an effort that could have been so much bigger. If you want to make a statement, think big. One think that disturb me is that some of the models look like children which is a bit off putting for me. Givenchy is also showing skirts/kilts and I do like everyone who pushes the envelope when it comes to menswear but if you are going to do something, make it look good.

Givenchy Spring 2012

Riccardo Tisci has created a very delectable collection for Givenchy spring 2012. It feels fresh, innovative and futuristic. Personally I have always been a sucker for the futuristic influences. The sillouettes feels very 2012 and it feels like Tisci has pushed the envelope when it comes to delievering something that feels new in shape and form. If there is any justice in the world the collection should be a success when it comes to sales.

Givency Fall 2011

My attention was caught by this ensemble from Givenchy when I read ID Magazine. I like the skirt but then I have always liked strong prints. The top on the other hand I would like to throw in the nearest cinder. The 80s is back with a vengenance but having your bra on display like Madonna in her heyday is not really a viable option, at least not if it is style you are aiming for. If it is massive attention you want then go full throttle. I imagine the model in knee high, black boots with a considerable heel, a black and snug tailored jacket topped off with a black man's hat. Voila, we have a power woman.

The above image belong to the advertising campaign for Givenchy's fall collection 2011. Since the mid 1990s homoeroticism and lesbian chic have frequented the marketing of clothes quite regurlarily. Apparently it is still tantalizing even though we write 2011. If it now creates a stir and sells more clothes all the more power to you, but personally I risk falling asleep.

Givenchy Spring 2011

The fashion house, Givenchy, has been around for quite some time. It was founded in 1952 by Hubert de Givenchy. Today it is owned by LVMH and last year the sales ended with 176 American dollars making Givenchy the second biggest clothing division in the conglomerate after Dior.

When Hubert de Givenchy retired John Galliano took over. After Galliano moved on to Dior Alexander McQueen stepped in. Riccardo Tisci took over womenswear in 2005 and then menswear in 2009. Riccardo Tisci is influenced by space-age and goth, creating somewhat darker collections. It is a far cry from the style of Hubert de Givenchy and we will see what happens with the brand this decade. I'm ambivalent to the suits above and the S&M inspired head gear leaves me cold.

I wonder if Hubert de Givenchy is spinning in his grave just now?

John Galliano

John Galliano is one of the brightest stars on fashion heaven and has already written himself into the history books. It would be interesting to step into the mind of John Galliano. I expect it to be a very colourful world. A man that can dream up dresses like the ones we see above is a genius of his trade.

Galliano was born in Gibraltar in 1960. He went to the prestigious school Central St Martins and graduated in 1984. His graduation collection inspired by the French revolution was bought by Browns. He started his own label and started a rocky road of creative triumphs and economic whirlwinds. In 1995 he was appointed head designer of the fashion house Givenchy and in 1996 moved on to Dior. Both brands felt old and outdated before John Galliano injected a well needed dose of energy into them and made them hotter than hot cakes.

At fashion college he was an idol and an inspiration. Every student of course wanted to end up generating the same atention as John Galliano. I remember when Kate Moss paraded down the catwalk in a Union Jack jacket and nothing much else. It was all the buzz.

His menswear is just as atention grabbing. I wouldn't exactly run to the shops and attack the racks of clothes like a stampede. Unless I was going to attend a masquerade.
