Dresses

Christmas is upon us and New Year's is around the corner. The tradition is to have New Year's parties and to be dressed up to your teeth. Dior has some mindblowing dresses but they don't seem to be so easy to sit down in, but who cares when you look gorgeus.

Dior at Paris Fashion Week

The fashion show for Dior went ahead as planned during the Paris Fashion Week and with good reviews. The only downer was the sacking of head designer John Galliano due to his racist slurs at a restaurant in Paris. How the mighty has fallen.

Baby doll inspired dresses and strong influences from the 1970s are some of what could be seen parading down the catwalk. The dresses are flimsy and romantic and could make a nice summer's day even more appealing. Soft colours, beautiful fabrics and nicely cut. Just what we have come to expect from Dior. The shoes are tantalising but will probably lead to a sprained ankle or two.

I love the style of the 1970s but the past decade it feels like I have seen it one time too many as an influence in designers' collections. That being said I really like the clothes shown by Dior. I get pictures of female spies on secret missions in glamorous places around the world. Why not call the style Hippy de Luxe.

Galliano - Fallen from Grace

In Sweden we have an expression that would translate into "having taken a shit in the blue cabinet". It means that you have made an arse of yourself, said the wrong thing and so on and so forth. According to an article I read John Galliano has taken a crap in that particular cabinet. Apparently he was filmed at a restaurant being highly intoxicated, being rude to the other guests and more or less glorifying Adolf Hitler. Definitely the wrong move. He has now been sacked from his highly publicized position as head designer for Dior.

No matter how gifted you are, no matter how famous you are and no matter how rich you are it doesn't give you the right to be rude to other people, belittle others and spew offensive remarks around you like a fertilizer on steroids. No one is immune and the higher up you are in the hierarchy the harder you fall.

Dior Spring 2011

There are some beautiful dresses from Dior at the moment. Galliano delievers as usual. When I see the style of the models' hair the style of the 1940s and Hollywood stars like Veronica Lake, Barbara Stanwyck and Rita Hayworth spring to mind. The bright, vibrant colours make me happy and make me think of candy and Cadbury's chocolate.
It is quite a far cry from Dior's New Look that he created after the second world war. But I think that they have taken care of the label very well and goes from strength to strength.

John Galliano

John Galliano is one of the brightest stars on fashion heaven and has already written himself into the history books. It would be interesting to step into the mind of John Galliano. I expect it to be a very colourful world. A man that can dream up dresses like the ones we see above is a genius of his trade.

Galliano was born in Gibraltar in 1960. He went to the prestigious school Central St Martins and graduated in 1984. His graduation collection inspired by the French revolution was bought by Browns. He started his own label and started a rocky road of creative triumphs and economic whirlwinds. In 1995 he was appointed head designer of the fashion house Givenchy and in 1996 moved on to Dior. Both brands felt old and outdated before John Galliano injected a well needed dose of energy into them and made them hotter than hot cakes.

At fashion college he was an idol and an inspiration. Every student of course wanted to end up generating the same atention as John Galliano. I remember when Kate Moss paraded down the catwalk in a Union Jack jacket and nothing much else. It was all the buzz.

His menswear is just as atention grabbing. I wouldn't exactly run to the shops and attack the racks of clothes like a stampede. Unless I was going to attend a masquerade.
